1. Know the Chain-of-Command The best way to impress your boss is to make her life easier. To do so, you need to be aware of the chain of command in the office. Who does your boss report to? What are her performance targets? Most people are only focused on me-me-me. However, the big picture is always at play. Help your boss hit her targets, and you are guaranteed to be the fastest promoted employee in her team. 2. Volunteer for unpopular tasks
There are always something extra to be done, some backlog to clear, some unpopular task to address. Volunteer for these tasks from time to time, and your boss is sure to notice. Pick tasks that take you out of your comfort zone (be it in terms of skill-set or people that you can meet). Many companies also have volunteering opportunities or fitness-related events. This is a great way to meet new people in your company. 3. Pitch Perfect It is easy to suggest minor corrections and small ways on how to improve a project. It is difficult to actually pitch something to your boss, something new, something tangible and something that will move the company / team to a new (and even better, more profitable) direction. To capture new heights, you must challenge yourself. This requires effort on your part and some guts. Try to spend some time at the end of the week thinking about the direction of the company and how this ties in with the work that you are doing. Think about the organizational structure or work flow that is currently assigned. Is there anything you would change? Read industry news frequently. Is there anything that catches your eye that your boss should know or your company should be doing? Suggest these things to your boss and you will prove yourself to be an extra valuable member of her team. If you have any career-related questions, be sure to write to us at [email protected]
