Hello, when you say "ability to take instruction" does that mean taking instruction from your higher ups or the client. Also, how do you demonstrate this ability to the interviewer? Feels a little iffy to me. Thanks!

Hi Pei Wen,

Thanks for the question. A junior associate or trainee does not have much experience in the practice area, and the best way to learn is simply by following the instructions given by the senior partner. Of course, as you move up in seniority and have a couple years PQE under your belt, your ability to think independently and handle clients on your own will start to come into play.

To demonstrate this at an interview, you can consider giving examples where you excelled at being a team player, in taking instructions given by a team leader and completing them to the best of your ability. The cross border and cross disciplinary nature of legal practice today means that being able to work in a team is as important, if not more important, than being able to lead. All good leaders were good team players at some point in their career.
